Keeping legal fees down

You can negotiate with your law firm on fees. But there are ways of keeping cost to the minimum.
Organisation is key to this and you should draw up a list of questions you want to ask before your meetings – so that you waste no time. If a law firm is billing you by time, it pays to keep to the point.
Organising all the relevant paper work in advance is also important as is sorting out issues with your lawyer such as timescales, costs (including other costs such as barristers fees or reports etc), prospects of success and what you can do to assist.
The better briefed your lawyer is, the easier it is to estimate what the case will cost, potential hurdles etc.
Try to answer questions as concisely and accurately as possible and ask questions to ensure that both you and your solicitor are on the right track and are understanding the same issues.
Keep tabs on costs and make sure that you comply as quickly as possible with any requests.
Check who is going to be doing the work – partners are more expensive than their assistants, but may do the work faster.
