One in five employees have committed workplace fraud

New research has found that 20 per cent of workers confess to defrauding their employer through exaggerated expense claims.

The survey, conducted by employee expenses service provider GlobalExpense, found that one in five admitted to exaggerating an expense claim and one in 10 said they would probably do it again over the Christmas period because of the economic downturn.

Nearly four million employees in Britain can claims expenses and the average amount added to an expense claims is about £14.

"Naturally, this is a worrying statistic for employers, particularly in the current economic climate," says employment solicitor Andrew Haywood of City law firm Dawsons LLP. "It is imperative that employers ensure they have an effective expense policy in place and regularly monitor expense claims"
